Optimizing your Hormones and Balancing Your Life with Integrative Medicine

Naturopathic Doctors help patients remove and address underlying obstacles to health issues. Naturopathic therapies, which include nutrient supplementation, dietary counseling, detoxification, acupuncture, lifestyle changes, and the use of botanical medicines are absolutely essential to achieve optimal health.  However, one fact of life is that hormones decline with time as part of the aging process.  Many people attribute their health issues to aging and do not believe that anything can be done about it.  This is simply not true. Hormone restoration therapies can be used for hormone imbalances and deficiencies at any stage of life and have many inherent benefits. See “Benefits of Hormone Restoration” for women and “Benefits of Testosterone Therapy” for men.

Bio-identical Hormones

(hormones that are exactly like what humans make in their own bodies)

Medical Doctors and Nurse Practitioners who are specially trained in bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) have prescribing privileges in Ontario for natural, bio-identical hormones. Some Naturopathic Doctors, including myself, have the skills and training to help patients with hormone restoration, but due to limitations in their “prescribing lists”, are only able to prescribe a few specific hormones.  Hormones act and work together and hormone restoration that is partial may not be optimal for the patient.

To achieve the best results in hormone restoration, and to help people “live their best life” I have collaborated with Nurse Practitioner, Arv Buttar, NP.  Initial and follow-up consultations with myself and with Arv provide in-depth information to assess hormone & thyroid imbalances and deficiencies. Optimal hormone health treatments, individually tailored to each patient provide careful and caring coordination of medical care.  Initially, comprehensive laboratory testing is done to establish baseline values.  Laboratory testing every 3 months for the first year plus symptom monitoring are also part of hormone restoration therapy for the purpose of monitoring.

There is a growing demand and desire to “live young” and prevent disease.  I am committed to helping people live their best life.  Individualized Hormone Restoration can be part of a powerful solution to obtain this goal.

How do I get started with Hormone Restoration using Bioidentical Hormones?

  1. Patients will initially meet with Kathleen for Naturopathic assessment and Treatment Plan which will determine if you would benefit from bio-identical hormone restoration and address other health issues (food intolerances, digestive health, nutritional deficiencies, etc.). The whole person is addressed for optimal treatment outcomes.  Your patient intake forms and any other relevant or requested health records will be sent from Kathleen’s office via fax to Arv, NP (Nurse Practitioner) with your file and any health records (mammograms, ultrasounds, etc.).
  2. Within 48hrs of Arv receiving the intake forms, you will be sent a blood lab requisition (via a secure email, bloodwork is covered by OHIP where applicable).  Once your blood test results are back (first blood tests take 10-14 business days for full results), the NP will send you an “email” with a link to book your appointment with Arv using video Conference/Zoom Health. The NP will review blood test results and do a complete assessment and then prescribe the appropriate BHRT medication.  After your consult is complete you are given the next lab requisition for follow-up labs and an appointment with Arv in 3 months’ time.
  3. Blood test results and a patient summary by the NP are forwarded to Kathleen each time in order to assist with Naturopathic therapies.  Follow-up with Kathleen is usually in 4-6 weeks after the initial appointment and prior to each subsequent appointment with the NP.
  4. Fees for Arv are per consult and are collected and paid to Kathleen.  Naturopathic invoicing for appointments is separate and is covered by most extended health plans (not OHIP).
